The problem is that Colt changed their serial numbering system sometime in the late '90s or early '00s, I think. All AR's numbers before then started with SP (for Sporter) XXXXXX, now it's different. Don't know if they have different blocks for different models or what.My marked HBAR AR-15A2, bought in '90, has serial number SP 248XXX. Lower has standard pins, no mag release fence and no sear block. Bayonet lug was milled off as this was back when the 'Assault Weapons' brouhaha was going on, so Colt attempted to 'de-assault' their rifles.didn't work.
Dec 25, 2013 For Trade: Colt AR-15 Sporter Target Model Pre-Ban (R6551) Exc. Cond Pre Ban Colt AR-15 Sporter Target in Excellent condition. Serial Number ST 0316XX. (1994) Cash Offers allowed. A2 Stock - Improved stock used on M16A2. Longer by 5/8 Case deflector S-1 Fire Control. So I bought a pre-ban Sporter Target on Gunbroker. While I was waiting for it to ship, I realized I could put a shorter, fixed stock on my post-ban M&P 15 and put a sling and red-dot on it. So it suffices as a 16' barrel, legal length carbine for defense and target fun. So now I have this never-been-fired pre-ban Sporter Target. PRE BAN AR 15 information is very valuable to shooters in states that maintain an ASSAULT WEAPON BAN. While I dont normally advocate borrowing content from other websites I feel this information is invaluable and needs to be protected, duplicated and shared for the greater good of the shooting community.
I am sitting here next to my Colt Sporter Target Model with a GS serial#.The front pin on the lower is big, the back is small. Right side of receiver is flat.Rifle has collapsible stock, bayo lug, A2 flash hider, and 14.5' M4 profile barrel. The upper receiver, barrel, and all parts are Colt marked. It also is wearing a scout c-more sight. (Not that it matters)What is this?I saw one on gunsamericawanted $4k. I assume he's full of crap.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! From the 6551 data base II archive thread that I posted yours was made in 1990.If I remember correctly, and fellow members please correct me if I'm wrong, there were no production M4 profile barrels was available from the factory at that time. The only available carbines in '90 that I could remember was the R6520 Gov't Model carbine with collapsible stock and lightweight 16' barrels and the R6530 Sporter Lightweight with fixed short A2 style stocks (which I also had owned before). The M4 Kick came after that point! My guess is that this is a parts gun and someone replaced the original barrel with a Colt M4 barrel. I will bet if you call Colt, they will confirm that this left the plant with a 16-inch lightweight barrel.I owned a 6530 and 6551 back in those days. Good guns but both of mine had sear blocks. Remember that these are in the BLUE LABEL transitional period so there are all kinds of strange Colts from his period that have all kinds of mixed part combinations. Thanks for that info.
