Akula Class Star Trek

Jan 20, 2007 - The Akula class Starship is a TMP era destroyer. While we do already have several Akula's available on the site its always nice to see some.

IIRC, the SFC/SFB game has a two-nacelled destroyer (top and bottom nacelles) of that name, for the rather fuzzy TOS movie era. The SFC manual suggests 2275 as the year the prototype was built. The lead ship supposedly has NCC-278-A painted on, honoring an earlier starship, so we can't use the registry to suggest an era or chronological order even if we thought that TOS movie registries were chronologically ordered; no other registries are known. There's also the Akula perimeter action ship subclass from Todd Guenther's Ships of the Star Fleet 2. That's from 2285. Then again, the SotSF chronology suggests that ST:TMP took place in 2271 or so, while modern canon has it no earlier than 2273, so one might adjust the other years accordingly. Or then not.Timo Saloniemi.

This design was to compete the destroyer version of the Okinawa-Class starship.23rd CenturyThe class is usually seen doing border patrol, escort duties and combat operation. The latter two duties, the class is paired with a larger class of starship, like the Miranda- or Ulysses-Class.The class is also prominently used in the academy for practical lessons, particularly during the final year.By late-2280s, the class, along with the Apollo- and Constitution-Class, were designated as legacy ships. Unlike the Constitution-Class, production for this class and her variant ceased by the end of the century.24th CenturyHowever, during the tensions between the Federation and Klingon, Starfleet decided to produced the Apollo- and Akula-Class starships, as the Oberth-Class in inadequate in tactical situations. The Federation-Cardassian war also prolonged the life of this class and her variant.By 2367, after the Battle of Wolf 359, Starfleet realised that the ship had seen its days and decided to remove the class from production entirely.
